Community Board 17 is home to a vibrant group of people from all walks of life, who live, work, and play here. We have great schools, amazing small businesses, beautiful tree lined blocks and engaging community organizations that call this place home. This community is amazing and it is worth protecting. That is why the Community Board exists—to support residents and to care for our neighborhood.
Caring for our neighborhood is a collective effort. Community Board members, Committee Chairs, and our office staff are here to work with all residents, business owners, teachers, city agencies and more to make sure that the East Flatbush, Rugby, Remsen Village, Farragut, Erasmus and Ditmas Village neighborhoods continue to be welcoming and safe for all. We welcome everyone to attend meetings, speak up, make suggestions, and volunteer their time to support our community.
As we all know, our community, like much of New York, is in a state of change. The only way that we can have a say in what that change looks like, is to show up and make our voices heard. We have many common concerns — housing, sanitation, traffic, safety, public health, jobs, education for our youth, and support for our seniors. These concerns need creative solutions and dedicated support. As Chair, I invite all members of our community to share your thoughts and skills to make this community better. We will only move forward by working together.
Join a committee, attend a General Board meeting, volunteer at an event. There are many ways that you can contribute to the place you call home, and I invite you to join us in whatever capacity you can. As they say, many hands make light work, and we can use all the hands we can get.
I am incredibly honored and humbled to serve as your Chairperson, and I look forward to the good work we will do, together.
In community,
Monzurat Oni
