{"id":14,"date":"2019-11-25T20:20:08","date_gmt":"2019-11-25T20:20:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cbbrooklyn.cityofnewyork.us\/cb2\/?page_id=14"},"modified":"2026-01-16T15:12:40","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T20:12:40","slug":"about-the-district","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cbbrooklyn.cityofnewyork.us\/cb2\/about\/about-the-district\/","title":{"rendered":"Our District"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brooklyn Community District 2 (BKCD2) consists of Downtown Brooklyn and the surrounding residential neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights, Fulton Ferry, DUMBO, and Vinegar Hill along the western and northern waterfront; Boerum Hill to the south; Fort Greene and Clinton Hill to the east, and the 300-acre Brooklyn Navy Yard manufacturing district on the northeast border. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Downtown Brooklyn is the third-largest Central Business District in New York City, and the civic center of Kings County (Borough of Brooklyn), which is the most populous county in New York State. If Brooklyn were an independent city, it would be the fourth largest in the United States after New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago; and larger than Atlanta, Boston, Minneapolis, and Washington D.C. combined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the neighborhoods in BKCD2 were first developed in the 19th century as low-density row houses and low-scale commercial streets. The construction of high-rise buildings accelerated after the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883 and the introduction of elevated rail and streetcar lines. In the early 20th century, multiple subway lines opened in Downtown Brooklyn, which spurred further development of taller residential and commercial buildings until the Great Depression. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the <a href=\"https:\/\/downtownbrooklyn.com\/dtbk20\/\">2004 rezoning of Downtown Brooklyn<\/a>, an explosion of high rise development has once again dramatically changed the housing mix and skyline, including the 2022 completion of the 93-story Brooklyn Tower, which is the first \u201csupertall\u201d building in Brooklyn, and the tallest building on Long Island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/boundaries.beta.nyc\/?map=cd&amp;dist=302\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BKCD2 shares borders<\/a> and interests with <a href=\"https:\/\/brooklyncb6.cityofnewyork.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BKCD6<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brooklyncb8.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BKCD8<\/a> to the south, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/brooklyncb3\/index.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BKCD3<\/a> to the east, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/brooklyncb1\/index.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BKCD1<\/a> to the north, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/manhattancb1\/index.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MCD1<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/manhattancb3\/index.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MCD3<\/a> along the East River waterfront including Governors Island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the 2020 census, BKCD2 experienced one of NYC\u2019s largest population growths in the preceding decade, with 31% growth in total residents (now 130,021), including a 33% increase in residents under the age of 18 (20,037 total). Annual average median income also rose to $100,000 and the District saw 35% growth in total occupied housing units (61,221), however median rent also increased 90%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/data2go.nyc\/?page=explorer&amp;selectedId=302&amp;activeGeography=CD&amp;moduleId=density&amp;DBModuleId=hdi&amp;RGModuleId=completed-a-graduate-degree&amp;activeModuleId=ahdi&amp;activeRGModuleId=completed-a-graduate-degree&amp;activeDBModuleId=hdi&amp;activeSTModuleId=education-index&amp;activeIndicator=qiro&amp;bivariateIndicator=yggr_ofltexkt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Districtwide statistics suggest a high quality of life<\/a>, however aggregate data can obscure the reality of individual neighborhoods.
