While the official street name remains unchanged on the City Map, an honorary name may be added following approval by the City Council and the Mayor.<\/p>\n<p>As the local advisory body for East Flatbush, Northeast East Flatbush, Rugby, Farragut\/Hyde Park, Remsen Village, Ditmas Village and Erasmus, <strong>Brooklyn Community Board 17<\/strong> is the first point of review for all proposed co\u2011naming within our district. CB17 evaluates each proposal carefully to ensure that honorary designations reflect the values, history, and diversity of our neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong>Standards for Consideration<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>CB17 supports honorary co\u2011namings for individuals or organizations whose contributions are <strong>extraordinary, meaningful, and connected to Community Board District 17<\/strong>. While full criteria are detailed in the downloadable guidelines, CB17 generally considers:<\/p>\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li><strong>Individuals<\/strong> whose accomplishments in community service, civic leadership, public service, military service, business, culture, education, or philanthropy demonstrate exceptional significance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Organizations<\/strong> with longstanding, positive impact on the district or New York City.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clear connection to CB17<\/strong>, whether through residency, representation, service, or community leadership.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Documented support<\/strong>, including statements, petitions, records, or historical materials.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Honorees must be deceased<\/strong>, and only one public space may be named for any individual.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For full eligibility requirements, definitions, and documentation standards, download the complete guidelines below.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Review Process<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Street co\u2011naming proposals follow a multi\u2011step review:<\/p>\n<ol role=\"list\" start=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Committee Review &amp; Public Hearing<br \/>\n<\/strong>The proposal is presented at a public meeting for CB17<em> Public Safety\/Transportation<\/em> committee. Community members may provide input.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Full Board Vote<\/strong><br \/>\nThe committee may advance a recommendation to the full Community Board. CB17 then votes on whether to recommend the co\u2011naming to the appropriate City Council Member.<\/li>\n<li><strong>City Council Review<\/strong><br \/>\nThe City Council typically reviews co\u2011naming proposals twice per year.
